Professional Packing Tips for Better Storage

This section gives you hints on how to pack your cartons and furniture to protect them from damage, as well as how to get the most out of your storage space. Careful packing and planning now will help save you time, money, and energy later.
So here are a few simple rules to start with.

Cardinal Rule....
Mark and Seal All Cartons

All cartons should be clearly marked for easy identification. List the important contents and the room they belong in. Such as master bedroom, family room, etc. Seal boxes with packing tape for protection during transit and to keep the dust out.

Fragile Items

Take your time when packing dishes, glasses and other breakable items. Wrap each item individually and cushion all sides of the carton with crumpled paper. Extra strength dish packs are available for just this purpose. Also, make your bureau drawers earn their passage as extra packing containers for small and fragile items. Sweaters, blankets, and towels make excellent padding.

Records and Books

Books and records get heavy when packed in bunches. So use small cartons for easy lifting. When the carton gets heavy fill remaining space with crumpled newspaper or lightweight bedding/towels, to prevent shifting. For extra protection line book cartons with plastic (a trash bag will do nicely).

Furniture
Remove table and chair legs whenever possible, and protect non-removable legs by covering with protective bubble wrap. Lash bed rails together with rope. As you take items apart, mark all pieces so you know what goes where, for trouble-free reassembly later.

Appliances
Secure all moveable parts. Tape appliance doors shut when moving: wedge open in storage to prevent mildew. Before moving and certainly before storing, thoroughly clean your refrigerator, freezer and stove to remove food particles that may attract vermin.

Your Storage Space
Prepare your storage space by placing wood pallets on the floor under your goods to provide air circulation.
If you expect that you will occasionally need access to your items in storage, then by all means follow these three simple rules:

  • Leave an aisle
  • Move your heavy items to the back and store small, lightweight items in the front
  • Keep an inventory of what you have stored and where to find it.
